Essay --

According to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, the discussion of definite and indefinite descriptions has been at the center of heated debates of analytic philosophy for over a century. There have been many compelling arguments and interesting views by many philosophers on this topic and it is hard to yet conclude whose argument is more correct. In this essay, I will first briefly explain Russells analysis of definite descriptions, then present both Strawsons and Donnellans views of descriptions in ambition to Russells, then I will conclude the essay by showing why I find the analysis of definite descriptions by Donnellan more smooth-tongued than the others. To put it simply, Russell believes that the statement, the F is G has three components existence (xFx), uniqueness (xy((FxFy)y=x)), and predication (x(FxGx)). In other words, for a statement, the F is G, to be true, there must exist at least one thing which is F, there must exist at most one thing which is F, and whateve r is F must be G. To expand on this, a sentence of the form The F is G states, There is one and only one F and it is G and the difference between The F is G and An F is G is that the latter is just stating there is a (G) F, whereas the use of the definite article, the, emphasizes extra uniqueness. For example, it is true to handle of the son of Eric even when Eric has several sons, nevertheless it would be more correct to say a son of Eric. Russell further argues that if there is no unique F, an arrogance of the F is G is false. Strawson thinks otherwise.Strawson claims that Russell confuses properties of a sentence with properties of a use of that sentence. To explain, while Russell thinks truth-value belongs to sentence meanings... ...rase the F to refer to something, thus it does not completely embrace the definite descriptions as actually used in a natural language. For example, when I say, the leaves are red, I am referring to the object, leaves, that I am trying to communi cate across, but with Russells conjecture, this may not be the case. Using Strawsons theory, we must ascertain what object is being identified or referred to and what is being ascribed to it even earlier we evaluate for truth or falsity. For instance, when I say, Smiths murderer is insane, and it turns out that Smith was not actually murdered at all, then his theory fails as the description, Smiths murderer, does not apply to anyone. Contrastingly, to me at least, Donnellans theory encompasses the weaknesses of the theories by the other two, which is why I believe it is the more ingratiatory argument over the others.

Social Justice is NOT Achieved by Income Redistribution Essay -- Globa

The term social umpire has existed since the 1840s and has continued to transform everywhere the years. Global justice is simply another in a long line of interchangeable prefixes such as national justice, economic justice etc that precede the word justice. A plethora of policies are advocated under the name of global justice. This paper will consider the more popular proposal of income redistribution and consider its intellectual foundation and how it relates to justice, as well as its real world implications. The most apparent and theoretically, the most easily overcome obstacle organic in this idea is the very definition of the term social justice. As the years go by the term grows to encompass an ever change magnitude number of issues. It can mean anything from income redistribution to AIDS prevention. For some contemporary examples, the student activist group Global Justice1 has no definition of the term it so prominently uses as its name yet states that its purpose deals with AIDS, trade and child survival. Nowhere does the organization attempt to explain why their tellicular stand on those particular issues has anything to do with global justice. USC professor Robin D.G. Kelley is the executive editor of the Social Justice Wiki2. The stated objective of the online encyclopedia is to document mingled activist groups and movements3. Any attempt to discern any further insight of the term social justice from the very encyclopedia dedicated to its name will result in failure as there is no indication as to why those specific groups fall under the banner of social justice and other groups do not, except for purely subjective and arbitrary guidelines4.The pervasiveness and the emptiness of the term speak volumes ab... ...e on society, but rather we have a clear field of study of who is being unjust to whom. The incredible irony of this situation would be that this legitimate and justifiable form of global justice (in which case the guilty parties wer e unjust in their individual action and are clearly identified) would usually be invoked in order to counter policies enacted precisely under the justification of social justice. Perhaps social justice activists can redeem themselves of this past error, but only if they begin advocating against the injustice of trade barriers and immigration restrictions for that is the only valid application of justice on a global scale. Any other justification for income redistribution leads to innocent individuals who justly acquired their material wealth, unjustly forced to pay compensation for the suffering of others they had no part in promoting.

Webster defines love as a strong feeling of attraction resulting from sexual desire enthusiasm or fondness. however to me love is not just a feeling, but it is the way of life that you treat that special someone that you care for. Treating them so kindly so theyll know you care and love them. Love in my eyes, is making that sacrifice for someone, clear-sighted that you might regret it sooner or later. Love is how you make another person feel when you are in their presence. Love is the laughter that you share, the time you spend, an d the human relationship that you build with that special someone. Many people show or express their love for someone in many and different ways. For instance, there was an ancient Egyptian Poem that captivated my attention. While I was reading the poem it made me realize how more people view love the same way as I do. The poem is named Love, how Id love to slip down to the pond. In the poem there were lines that helped me realize that love is not what you say, it is what you do. And in the poem there was a line that stood out far from the rest. It said, Just for you Id wear my new Memphis swimsuit, made of sheer linen, fit for a queen- Come see how it looks in the water. non caring about how she looks to others or how foolish she might feel, she entices her mate with a swimsuit that when w... ...itten by Chung Tzu there is a pome numbered 22 in the text. stop of it reads Of fair girls the prettiest Gave me a red flute. The flush of that red flute Is pleasure at the girls beauty . She has Been in the pastures and brought for me rush-wool, Very beautiful and rare. It is not you that are beautiful But you were given by a lovely girl. In my opinion the moral of the poem is not to cherish what is given to you, but cherish the thought and earnestness of the person. Material items can be lost, broken, or even stolen. But when you see it as an action of ones emotion, the thought of that item ant the person who gave it to you will feel on forever.
