Interracial Relationships in To Kill a Mockingbird Essays

At that time, African Americans were seen as the minority and were not to be seen as equals. However, times changed and then the laws that banned interracial relationships were uplifted. As a result of these laws though, many white Americans today still discriminate because of the past. This states that the minority tends to see more discrimination toward them, thus this is going to be a major factor that will determine if they are in an interracial relationship. Therefore, the interracial relationships today are decided by both people in the relationship, and there are no punishments for being in one of these relationships. Society nowadays is accepting of interracial relationships. In this paper we will analyze the function of E-government within developing state in the South Africa with the aid of instance survey. First of all we will see what is E-government? E-Government E-Government ( short for electronic authorities, besides known as digital authorities, on-line authorities or transformational authorities ) is a diffused neology used to mention to the usage of information and communicating engineering to supply and better authorities services, minutess and interactions with citizens, concerns, and other weaponries of authorities. Delivery theoretical accounts and activities of e-Government The primary bringing theoretical accounts of e-Government can be divided into: Government-to-Citizen or Government-to-Customer ( G2C ) Government-to-Business ( G2B ) Government-to-Government ( G2G ) Government-to-Employees ( G2E ) Within each of these interaction spheres, four sorts of activities take topographic point: Pushing information over the Internet, e.g. regulative services, general vacations, public hearing agendas, issue Jockey shortss, presentments, etc. Bipartisan communications between the bureau and the citizen, a concern, or another authorities bureau. In this theoretical account, users can prosecute in duologue with bureaus and station jobs, remarks, or petitions to the bureau. Conducting minutess, e.g. lodging revenue enhancement returns, using for services and grants. These types of activities may be performed but non may be that all activities are performed by all the states. Some have greater but some have less Chiefly intent of presenting this theoretical account is to direct entree to the Government. So better the efficiency of public services bringing in South Africa. This theoretical account is based on instance survey research, focused on one of the authoritiess primary service bringing programmes societal grants, as mentioned in instance survey. South African Social Security Agency ( SASSA ) was established as an extension of authorities bringing arm that administers the bringing of societal grants to the poorest of the hapless in South Africa. SASSA s Vision and mission is aligned with several Batho Pele rules. Batho Pele which literally means people foremost . Introduction of this Model Batho Pele A ; Public Service Delivery in South Africa. Batho Pele is South Africa s constitutionally mandated public service bringing doctrine. This theoretical account ensures that all the citizens can keep public retainers accountable for the degrees of service receive from authorities. The expected transmutation in service bringing is better comprehended on the contemplation that South Africa has merely been a Democratic state since 1994. Here we look into background of this theoretical account. The way of service bringing transmutation officially began in 1995 with the release of the White Paper on the Transformation of Public Service. The WPTPS established the institutional model that could steer the debut of new policies and the execution of the new constitutional authorizations. It was shortly followed in 1997 by the White Paper on Transforming Public Service Delivery, labeled as the Batho Pele White Paper. The Batho Pele White Paper specifically aimed at advancing incorporate and seamless public service bringing. This was on the footing of the Batho Pele doctrine. Batho Pele advocates nine rules to steer public Servants ; Consultation with citizens Puting service criterions Increasing entree to information Guaranting courtesy Supplying information openness and Transparency damages and value for money. On the other manus South Africa, through its Center of Public Service Innovation ( CPSI ) , places important Importance to initiatives to transform authorities s manner of working through ICT a impression normally known as E-government / e-governance. E-Government A ; E-Governance The footings e-government and e-governance are frequently used to depict a authorities s usage of Information and Communication Technology ( ICT ) to render services to its citizens. There is a argument in research community about these two footings of E-government and E-governance. E-governance can be defined as the usage of emerging information and communicating engineerings to ease the procedures of authorities and public disposal E-government can be defined as the usage of Information engineering to back up authorities operations, engage citizens, and supply authorities services . In the definition of e-governance, we see that it focuses on the usage of ICT to help the disposal and direction of Government. On other manus in the definition of e-government we see that it focuses on the usage of ICT to supply the services in the support of authorities operations for the public service bringing of people of that state. The dominant theoretical accounts for e-government find their roots in public direction theoretical accounts and e-business theoretical accounts. While research workers of e authorities differ on the rights, privileges and duties of clients, clients and Citizens. They by and large concur that e-government move through phases to make adulthood. Notwithstanding, the successful enterprises are difficult to come by. This realisation led to the really of import and implicit in concern: are authorities ICT technological inventions adhering to the rules of people first , so to state, are the authorities ICT technological inventions enabling the betterment of service bringing in South Africa? This instance survey besides tells us about the apprehension by concentrating on the authorities bureau duties for one of the cardinal service bringing plans the South African Social Security Agency, SASSA. A instance survey of a authorities section, the South African Social Security Agency ( SASSA ) , was adopted investigate the phenomenon of e-government will be studied in the context of Batho Pele. Since the each authorities service is measured against the same rules that are defined in Batho Pele. Applicability of this theoretical account can be drawn to other authorities units. In this instance analyze the information was collected by different ways, through structured face-to-face and telephonic interviews with people involved in presenting an ICT system to the concern units of the South African Social Security Agency ( SASSA ) . Pros/Advantages/Merits of this Model Any thing is non perfect in this universe except God. So every theoretical account is holding both features of virtues and demerits. Similarly here we are utilizing the E-government theoretical account which was used in South Africa for public service bringing. We know that it is really hapless state and non so developed. So many South Africans do non hold direct attack to public services which are supplied by the Government as stated in the instance survey. Following may be the major advantages of this theoretical account. Equally distribution of services Batho Pele aims to administer the services every bit among the populace. Not any distinction on the footing of race, gender, citizen, distance etc. its mean that every one has right every bit of public services . Access to information This theoretical account besides explains that the citizen has easy entree to the information about the Government public presentation and other activities so there may be answerability in such a mode. Quality services Access to information services empowers citizens and creates value for money, quality services. Decrease of Unnecessary outgo. When there will be e-government so easy information available about every thing of authorities and authorities establishment. It reduces unneeded outgo for the citizens. Questions that can by and large be answered during the interview can go around around what ICT enterprises are being used to increase the handiness of the service or merchandise and how accessible these enterprises are to communities who do nt hold the needed ICT substructure. Supplying information Availability of information with respects to merchandises and services should Not merely be at the service point, but should besides endeavor to increase the handiness of merchandises and services to the populace who are far off from those service points The chief country of focal point would be to increase the Availability of information to the populace who are far off From service points. ICT is used as a concern support tool, and since the concern of authorities is to present a public Service, ICT supports public service. The implementers of these ICT services will therefore be measured against the benchmarks of how good the public service was delivered. Therefore we should hold to carefully analyse the support of usage of ICT within the authorities section or bureau. This sensitiveness would greatly act upon the reading of the text collected during the interviews. Cost effectual It is convenient and cost-efficient for concerns, and the public benefits by acquiring easy entree to the most current information available without holding to pass clip, energy and money to acquire it. E-government helps simplify procedures and makes entree to authorities information more easy accessible for public sector bureaus and citizens. The awaited benefits of e-government include efficiency, improved services, better handiness of public services, and Transparency We see that due to utilize of this theoretical account transparence occurred. Due to the whole connected system through cyberspace engineering, every information is available for all. Accountability Study approved that due to E-government, there is greater answerability on each and every thing because all the information is available to every 1. So public knows the activities of authorities. So there is a answerability on authorities by public and other establishments and citizens. Democratization Through e-government the greater citizen can participation upon political issues. They can link themselves to politicians through cyberspace. This theoretical account gives the more crystalline authorities, leting the electors to see the consequence of their representatives. What they are making and what they are non making in right mode. Public can go more cognizant about the authorities activities and they can do best determination about their hereafter. Speed, efficiency, and convenience E-government allows citizens to interact with computing machines to accomplish aims at any clip and any location, and eliminates the necessity for physical travel to authorities agents sitting behind desks and Windowss. Improved accounting and record maintaining can be noted through cybernation, and information and signifiers can be easy accessed, bing quicker processing clip. Persons with disablements or conditions no longer hold to be nomadic to be active in authorities and can be in the comfort of their ain places. This theoretical account was accepted heartily, the immature people who were non take parting in political issues before but now they are excessively take parting is national degree issues due to e-government. Hazards There are many considerations and possible deductions of implementing and planing e-government, including disintermediation of the authorities and its citizens, impacts on economic, societal, and political factors, exposure to cyber onslaughts, and perturbations to the position quo in these countries. Hyper-surveillance Increased contact between authorities and its citizens goes both ways. Once e-government Begins to develop and go more sophisticated, citizens will be forced to interact electronically with the authorities on a larger graduated table. This could potentially take to a deficiency of privateness for civilians as their authorities obtains more and more information on them. In a worse instance scenario, with so much information being passed electronically between authorities and civilians, a totalitarian-like system could develop. When the authorities has easy entree to countless information on its citizens, personal privateness is lost. Cost Although a colossal sum of money has been spent on the development and execution of e-government, some say it has yielded merely a second-rate merchandise. The results and effects of test Internet-based authoritiess are frequently hard to estimate or unsatisfactory. Lack of secretiveness Although internet-based governmental plans have been criticized for deficiency of dependable privateness policies, surveies have shown that people value prosecution of wrongdoers over personal confidentiality. Ninety per centum of United States grownups O.K. of Internet tracking systems of felons, and 57 per centum are willing to waive some of their personal cyberspace privateness if it leads to the prosecution of felons or terrorists. Inaccessibility An e-government site that provides web entree and support frequently does non offer the possible to make many users including those who live in distant countries, are homebound, have low literacy degrees, exist on poorness line incomes, suffer from chronic unwellness, and are individual parents or older grownups. False sense of transparence and answerability Oppositions of e-government argue that on-line governmental transparence is doubtful because it is maintained by the authoritiess themselves. Information can be added or removed from the public oculus ( i.e. the Internet ) with or without public notice. For illustration, after the World Trade Center in New York City was attacked on September 11, 2001, United States federal functionaries removed a big sum of authorities information from its web sites in the name of national security. This act went comparatively unnoticed by United States citizens. To this twenty-four hours, really few Decision In decision we see that this E-Government theoretical account of public service bringing is really of import, adopted by authorities of South Africa. This theoretical account has advantages every bit good as disadvantages. This theoretical account has advantages of every bit information proviso, quality services, efficiency in public services bringing etc. but it has besides some drawbacks such deficiency of secretiveness, and so many other factors which may harmful for authorities through this system. The usage of e-government as a service bringing enabler will decidedly back up authorities s service betterment doctrine of Batho Pele, therefore seting people foremost. Now a twenty-four hours s engineering has become the every thing really easier, more enlightening, efficiency and cost effectual. Through this theoretical account of ICT can set people foremost, but merely if the usage of ICT is supported by the underlying concern procedures. For e authorities to be effectual, all e-government enterprises in South Africa should be integrated. E-government will merely genuinely be effectual if it is managed from a individual portfolio in authorities, and non from silos within each authorities section. Many other states have adopted this theoretical account such as United States. But degree of using this theoretical account may change. It means some are using higher degree and some states are using less degree of E-Government. In United States E-government theoretical account was used The United States Government under the Bush Administration has created a separate portfolio that manages the execution of e-government. The Office of Management and Budget ( OMB ) is developing what it calls the Federal Enterprise Architecture that will pull off the manner in which the United States Government does concern and peculiarly through the usage of e-government ( US Office of Management and Budget, 2007 ) decelerate advancement in implementing a individual portal for Government services. It is clear from the instance survey that South Africa needs a portfolio within its authorities that drives the execution of e-government. This will include policy, statute law and execution criterions. This is where the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer ( OGCIO ) besides plays a function to smooth the advancement of the usage of ICT in Government. Components It consists of three constituents, viz. : ICT Programme Management Government Chief Operations Officer and E-Government Architecture and Integration. The instance survey was focused on merely one country of e-government within the public service of South Africa, viz. the Department of Social Development and its service bringing constituent, the South African Social Security Agency. Similarly there is demand to done this in the other sections of Government of public service bringing. Which are inefficient as compared to others? And guarantee that the usage of ICT is effectual at all authorities sections. It is proposed that there is demand to be studied at sections that come under the deficiency of service bringing similar surveies should be done with Other sections to guarantee that the usage of ICT is effectual at all authorities sections, such as the Department of Home Affairs ( ID book and passport applications ) Department of Transport ( license applications and vehicle enrollments ) South African Revenue services ( revenue enhancement returns ) Mentions: E-Government A ; Public Service Delivery: Enabling ICT to set Peoples First A Case Study from South Africa. Assess the Impact of a Political Environment on International Business Essay
Assess the Impact of a Political Environment on International Business - Essay Example The significance of politics is much more in international business because the political system varies from country to country. Purpose of the study: According to (Batler 1998), a business entity should always take into account political risk because it is directly related to the investment, cost, tax structure and the return from that country. Keillor et al (2005) also have similar opinion. They admitted politics as a threat to international operation. Background of the study: A case study on Bangaladesh, a developing country can be cited here. The World Bank has forecasted the GDP growth of Bangladesh at 5.7 percent for the fiscal year 2014.This is way below the growth forecast 7.2 percent, done by the Bangladesh government itself. According to World Bank, the reasons behind the slower growth are political unrest, remittance crisis and problem in garments sector. Remittance is a political issue and garments is outsourced business, so again a political issue) 1. General political uncertainty: Though the normal political instability is not considered as a serious problem but if the uncertainty increases it harms the business growth. Giving the example of Africa Frynas (1998) mentioned that, political instability of Africa is the main barrier for economic development. 2. Ownership risk: If the government takes over a private business or goes for expropriation then the private owners might lose its ownership. These situations are termed as nationalization or protectionism of business. 3. Operational Risk: Government policies of the country where the business is operating matters a lot. The availability of finance, cost structure, tax structure, buying of property, human resource strategy, marketing technique everything is dependent on the government policy. Korrin (1979) expressed his concern in the case of political influence in business decision making process pr planning. In much

New Liabilities Under The Consumer Protection Act 1987 Yusuf Belgore Essay
New Liabilities Under The Consumer Protection Act 1987 Yusuf Belgore - Essay Example Before the enactment of the consumer protection act of 1987, those injured had to prove negligence of a manufacturer to sue successfully for any damage. The act now removes this bottleneck and a customer can already sue a supplier without proof of negligence, under sale of produce law. This law applies equal right to anyone injured by the defective product whether or not the good was sold to them . The major crux, of the consumer protection act, 1987, as we have seen so far is that it seeks to protect the consumer from unwholesome practice of producers. Part 1 of this act allows people injured by defective product to sue for compensation without having to prove that the producer was negligent. All that has to be proved is that the product was defective and the defect in the produce caused injury. The law applies to all consumer products and products used at place of work. This law makes taking litigation against producers of defective goods and in fact getting redress easy for the consumer. It also opens up lapses so that manufacturers of genuinely not defective goods get sued and may end up paying compensation. What this does is to allow for a larger influx of cases into the courts (over 1500 cases were in courts last year alone with 1000 successful prosecutions ). There are cases of adverse reaction to goods that are hitherto not defective for which an injured person may sue and in fact, get compensation for such cases. This is so because the act is very strict about liabilities. Thus the having contractual terms with the consumer does not exempt a producer from being sued.

Great Train Robbery Essay Example for Free
Great Train Robbery Essay Henry Hill, the character of Martin Scorseseââ¬â¢s film Goodfellas (1990), used to say: ââ¬Å"As far back as I can remember, Ive always wanted to be a gangsterâ⬠. The reason of the crime films and gagnster icons being of success with a public partly lies in this sublimated desire of an ordinary man to be as powerful, energetic, and famous as the criminals commemorated in mass-media. Rafter (2000, p. 3) explained the popularity of the genre by its fictional possibilities: [â⬠¦] crime films offer us contradictory sorts of satisfaction: the reality of what we fear to be true and the fantasy of overcoming that reality; the pleasure of entering the realm of the forbidden and illicit and the security of rejecting or escaping that realm in the end. The crime film is traditionally associated with the American tradition of the early twentieth century, when romantic tales about heroes conquering promising spaces of the New World prairies were superseded by the not a less romantic sagas about daring individuals conquering updated urban localities. Shadoian (2003, p. 3) referred to the crime film as a prominent context for ââ¬Å"both forming and reflecting the American imaginationâ⬠. Audience has been enjoying crime movies since 1903, when Edwin S. Porter shot his Great Train Robbery. More than a hundred years of our experience with the crime film taught the public, critics, directors and producers many lessons. Shadoian (2003, p. 3) identified three reasons for the genreââ¬â¢s longevity: (1) ââ¬Å"the issues it addresses have always been central to the American experienceâ⬠; (2) ââ¬Å"its formal properties have given them a clarity of outline and lucidity of expositionâ⬠; and (3) ââ¬Å"it has been infinitely flexible in adapting itself to shifting social and cultural conditionsâ⬠. But hardly is it absolutely right to emphasise the importance of the crime film for the American culture exclusively. The present dissertation analyses thirteen films made within the ââ¬Ëcrime movieââ¬â¢ context. Only six of them were produced by the USA-born directors: (1) William A. Wellman (1896 [Brookline, Massachusetts, USA] ââ¬â 1975 [Los Angeles, California, USA]) ââ¬â The Public Enemy (1931); (2) Raoul Walsh (1887 [New York, New York, USA] ââ¬â 1980 [Simi Valley, California, USA]) ââ¬â The Roaring Twenties (1939); White Heat (1949); (3) Martin Scorsese (b. 1942 [Queens, New York, USA]) ââ¬â Goodfellas (1990); Gangs of New York (2002); (4) Quentin Tarantino (b. 1963 [Knoxville, Tennessee, USA]) ââ¬â Pulp Fiction (1994). Though the film Brother (2000) is partially made in the United States settings, its creator is a famous Japanese director Takeshi Kitano (b. 1947 [Tokyo, Japan]). He is also responsible for another example of the crime movie, Hana-bi (aka Fireworks 1997). The other five films under analysis belong to the British directors: (1) John Boulting (1913 [Bray, Berkshire, England, UK] ââ¬â 1985 [Sunningdale, Berkshire, England, UK]) ââ¬â Brighton Rock (1947); (2) Mike Hodges (b. 1932 [Bristol, England, UK]) ââ¬â Get Carter (1971); (3) John Mackenzie (b. 1932 [UK]) ââ¬â The Long Good Friday (1980); (4) Jonathan Glazer (b. 1965 [London, England, UK]) ââ¬â Sexy Beast (2000); (5) Paul McGuigan (b. 1963 [Bellshill, Scotland, UK]) ââ¬â Gangster No. 1 (2000). It would be more correct to identify the reasons for the crime film being a success outside the boundaries of national mentalities. Leitch (2002) based his definition of the crime film within the conceptual context of culture rather than the national background. He (Leitch 2002, p. 14) argued that, [â⬠¦] a crime culture [ ] depends on normalizing the unspeakable, a place where crime is both shockingly disruptive and completely normal. Crime may have different metaphorical valences in different criminal subgenres ââ¬â it can demonstrate the fragility of the social contract in thrillers about innocent men on the run, attack the economic principles of the establishment in gangster films, express philosophical despair in films noirs, test masculine professionalism in private-eye films ââ¬â but it is always metaphorical. Every crime in every crime film represents a larger critique of the social or institutional order ââ¬â either the films critique or some characters. Finally, crime films dramatize not only the distinctive roles of criminal, victim, and avenger but also their interdependence and their interpenetration. Evidently, critics and spectators are lured to the genre by its flexibility and visualization of the concepts otherwise unseen or too repulsive to deal with in ordinary life. It is hypothesised that national mentalities affect the themes of crime movies but generic methods of the crime film depend rather on directorsââ¬â¢ individual backgraounds rather than on their nationality.

Essay --
Melyssa Arner Scott Robinson Western Civilization II 18 February 2014 1. Analyze and evaluate the life of Martin Luther and his influence on the Reformation. Before bringing about the Reformation, Martin Luther started out his life in Saxony. He was raised by a strict father who wished for his son to become a lawyer. Instead of achieving this, Martin Luther, due to a promise to St. Anne, became a man of the cloth. Those above Lutherââ¬â¢s station later enrolled him into the faculty of the university in Wittenburg. It would be at Wittenburg that Luther would change the way of the church, later to be called the Reformation. Luther believed that faith was a way of salvation, which became known as the ââ¬Å"justification by faithâ⬠. Martin Luther also began to question the clergy of the church, who made the public pay for indulgences in order for their souls to be freed. Due to his beliefs being ignored, Luther created his ââ¬Å"Ninety-five Thesesâ⬠. Through these theses, Lutherââ¬â¢s beliefs spread throughout the lands of Germany. His ideals about the church passed onto the German people and his acts would later influence the happenings of the Reformation. 2. List and discuss the various religious wars in Europe in the 1500s and 1600s concluding with the Thirty Years War. King Philip II of Spain was a strong supporter of Catholicism. He controlled not only Spain, but also the Netherlands, Southern Italy, and Burgundy. His wife, Mary, was the queen of England. The two of them worked to bring England back to Catholicism but many people were against this. When Mary passed, Elizabeth took the throne and Protestantism was more accepted.Angry with this, Philip sent an armada of ships to attack in 1588. The English ships were sent to defend and Spain was forced... .... The Native Americans were not the only ones to be effected by colonization in the New World. The inhabitants of Africa had their world changed when Europe decided to venture to the New World. While the Native Americans were pushed from their land, the Africans were taken away from theirs. The Europeans needed another set of hands to perform labor and the Africans played this part. Even though Africans could be linguists and guides for the white people, they were mostly used for housework and as farm hands. Africans were forced into slavery and owned by the Europeans. Similar to the Native Americans, the Africans were forced to convert to Christianity. Their religious views were not allowed in the New World. The Africans were not only forced to convert to Christianity but also their way of life. Africans had to dress and speak like the Europeans in order to survive.

How Peace Can be Achieved Essay
Peace could possibly be achieved if all people on Earth became non-judgmental towards each other and accepted each other as equals. In addition, everyoneââ¬â¢s spiritual beliefs, their faith, should be respected, whether they choose to believe in a higher power, or not. Believing in a higher power, in itself, does not guarantee peace because more people have been murdered in the name of God than for any other reason in all of historyPeace is a state of harmony characterized by the lack of violent conflict and the freedom from fear of violence. Commonly understood as the absence ofhostility, peace also suggests the existence of healthy or newly healed interpersonal or international relationships, prosperity in matters of social or economic welfare, the establishment of equality, and a working political order that serves the true interests of all. In international relations, peacetime is not only the absence of war or violent conflict, but also the presence of positive and respectfu l cultural and economic relationships. Peace is something which is vastly misinterpreted and misrepresented in todayââ¬â¢s world. Everyone has their own perceptions about itâ⬠¦out of which only a small portion actually come near in addressing ââ¬Ëpeaceââ¬â¢. In my personal opinion peace isnââ¬â¢t just a cleaver way of showcasing your imposed superficial friendliness while brewing up violent tendencies from within !As is highlighted by Indiaââ¬â¢s relations with Pakistanâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦in formal terms we are at peace since the kargil war of 1999â⬠¦.but reality rests in a completely different sphere. I believe peace is not just stopping warsâ⬠¦its something moreâ⬠¦.itââ¬â¢s the victory of reality over virtual superiority, the realization that everyone in the world is nothing but equal. It means to give the due share of respect to everyoneââ¬â¢s opinion and thinking before putting your ideas into action. It means forgetting all what happened in the pastâ⬠¦ hoping and believing that a better day, a better future is possible. This world has seen so many of the traumatizing atrocities in its lifetime ,as we become aware of our mistakes in the past it becomes the duty of each of us as individuals and as youth to change all this and create a better place for our succeeding generations â⬠¦and yes we can do it! I would begin this article with a story of an ancient Indian King who was obsessed with the desire to find the meaning of peace. What is peace and how can we get it and when we find it what should we do with it were some of the issues that bothered him. Intellectuals in his kingdom wereà invited to answer the Kingââ¬â¢s questions for a handsome reward. Many tried but none could explain how to find peace and what to do with it. At last someone said the King ought to consult the sage who lived just outside the borders of his Kingdom: ââ¬Å"He is an old man and very wise,â⬠the King was told. ââ¬Å"If anyone can answer your questions he can.â⬠The King went to the sage and posed the eternal question. Without a word the sage went into the kitchen and brought a grain of wheat to the King. ââ¬Å"In this you will find the answer to your question,â⬠the Sage said as he placed the grain of wheat in the Kingââ¬â¢s outstretched palm. Puzzled but unwilling to admit his ignorance the King clutched the grain of wheat and returned to his palace. He locked the precious grain in a tiny gold box and placed the box in his safe. Each morning, upon waking, the King would open the box and look at the grain to seek an answer but could find nothing. Weeks later another sage, passing through, stopped to meet the King who eagerly invited him to resolve his dilemma. The King explained how he had asked the eternal question and this sage gave him a grain of wheat instead. ââ¬Å"I have been looking for an answer every morning but I find nothing.â⬠The Sage said: ââ¬Å"It is quite simple, your honor. Just as this grain represents nourishment for the body, peace represents nourishment for the soul. Now, if you keep this grain locked up in a gold box it will eventually perish without providing nourishment or multiplying. However, if it is allowed to interact with the elements ââ¬â light, water, air, soil ââ¬â it will flourish, multiply and soon you would have a whole field of wheat which will nourish not only you but so many others. This is the meaning of peace. It must nourish your soul and the souls of others, it must multiply by interacting with the elements.â⬠Peace-a small word with a deeper meaning attached to itâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦different interpretations, different perspectives and different understandings yet the meaning is one but for oneââ¬â¢s own self. Setting a yardstick about what peace means to you is your own way of looking at it. When I hear this pure, magical word the first thing I see is a satisfied soul and not just a quiet that has prevailed. But when quiet prevails, it maybe for mourning a death or even remembering someone great or just a quiet night sleep. And as Oscar Romero says- Peace is not the product of terror or fear. Peace is not the silence of cemeteries. Peace is not the silent result of violent repression. Peace is the generous, tranquil contribution of all to the good of all. So peace implies as something quiet yet good-from within and for something outsideâ⬠¦.. Stillness is one of the most important attribute of peace and not just it leads to a quiet environment around but makes us quiet from inside. To obtain this peace is not easy. There is a constant fight going on inside youâ⬠¦.. White versus Black, Good versus Evil and when we obtain control over our ourselves we can win this war. Consequently, when good prevails over evil within us, can we spread peace to our external elements. Peace comes from living in the moment and looking for the good in others. Peacefulness comes from facing our fears and letting them ââ¬â trust that things will turn out all right. While it is true that the world has become so complex and so technologically oriented that individuals no longer believe that they count or that they can do anything to affect world events, it is precisely the oppos ite. For only when individuals take total responsibility for their own lives, find within themselves calm and power of ââ¬Ëgoodââ¬â¢ and live in peace with their neighbors and environment, only then will forces be set in motion that will eventually bring about world peace. Nations go to war, often quoting peace as the reason. We must realize peace is a journey, not an end. Yet, in our efforts to obtain peace, we often do the most unpeaceful things. Instead of seeking inner peace, we seek to enforce peace on others. And that just doesnââ¬â¢t work. Peace is a gift you can give to others and to yourself. If you seek peace with a sincere heart, you can find it. Peace has the power to move mountains. Mahatma Gandhi had spread peace to the world and this was his power or else how could a frail man like him get India its freedom and Indians their rights. The quality of life depends not upon external development or material progress, but upon the inner development of peace and happiness. We all wish for world peace, but world peace will never be achieved unless we first establish peace within our own minds. Without inner peace, outer peace is impossible. We can send so-called ââ¬Ëpeacekeeping forcesââ¬â¢ into areas of conflict, but peace cannot be imposed from the outside with guns. Only by creating peace within our own mind and helping others do the same can we hope to achieve peace in this world. We can see from this that if we want true, lasting happiness we need to develop and maintain a special experience of inner peace. The only way to do this is by graduallyà reducing and eliminating our negative, disturbed states of mind and replacing them with positive, peaceful states. Eventually, through continuing to improve our inner peace we will experience permanent inner peace, or ââ¬Ënirvanaââ¬â¢. Once we have attained nirvana we will be happy throughout our life, and in life after life. When a baby is born, he is innocent and believed to be the purest form of god in this materialistic world and when he dies he ââ¬ËRests in Peaceââ¬â¢. The unpeacefulness is in betwee n these two stages of human life as he gets trapped in the materialistic trap of this worldâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦ So, look for peace in you and not when no two nations are at war, or when you are relaxed because you are your biggest challenge and once you win over the evil inside you, no matter whatever happens outside you, you will surely be peacefulâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦. ââ¬Å"There is no way to peace; peace is the way.â⬠ââ¬â MAHATMA GANDHI Peace is a term that most commonly refers to an absence of aggression, violence or hostility.peace such a beautiful word. A word that makes us feel relaxed thinking about those beautiful white doves. When we come to imagine it we see the best of both worlds.A place close to nature and a place where happiness i sthe environment. But that world seems to remain a dream now! We talk about global peace and hold terrorism as the culprit. But think. when we cannot even keep peace with our ownselves , how can we talk about peace at such huge levels? We fight with people , our loved ones for reasons completely unnecessary. It takes less than a second to burst out in anger, doesnââ¬â¢t it? There the irony lies. What we must learn as the first step towards peace is SELF PEACE.. inner peace refers to a state of mind, body and mostly soul, a peace within ourselves. People that experience inner peace say that the feeling is not dependent on time, people, place, or any external object or situation. When we learn to remain at peace with ourselves we will be at peace with the rest of the world. Now talking about peace at international levels.. We all know how terrorism threatens the very roots of peace. but that does not sem to be the only culprit. since the time nuclear weapons have arrived thw world has not seen peacve and never will unles we make a conscious effort to stop threatening the world with our nuclear power. The most important thing to remember when we talk about peace is love.Love and peace are inseparable. We cannot have one without the other. With love achieving peace becomes a cakewalk. Whether it is inner peace or peace anywhere across the globe, loveà is the basis. love yourself and you shall attian inner peace. love others and you shall be at peace with all. To achieve peace at the global level, we also give NOBEL PEACE PRIZE.The prize has often met with controversy, as it is occasionally awarded to people who have formerly sponsored war and violence but who have, through exceptional concessions, helped achieve peace. With the basic ideas of peace in mind and conscious efforts towards achieving it in our daily life ,I hope we achieve our aim of global peace one day. ââ¬Å"When the power of love overcomes the love of power , the world will know peace.â⬠What peace means to meâ⬠¦ In a country, Peace is a term that most commonly refers to an absence of aggression, violence or hostility. Peace isnââ¬â¢t the absence of violence but rather the presence of justice. In a society, peace happens when different desires are in one agreement. Peace is based on many things, culture, education, family values, experience, & history (to name a few) but the basis is the sameââ¬â-to co-exist without war, killing, & overpowering a fellow being. According to me, Peace is the feeling that allââ¬â¢s right with the world. When everyone around me in my family, my friend circle and my neighbourhood is happy, eager to love, accept and relateâ⬠¦ I feel at peace. Also, to me it means following what my heart says and sharing mutual trust and respect for people around me. However, in todayââ¬â¢s world, peace and harmony face various threats. Terrorism, regional imbalance, economic disparity, and social inequality are some of the factors which threaten peace today. We all are so engrossed in our busy lifestyles and yet want our lives to be peaceful. We expect that peace to be omnipresent but what we need to realize is the fact that if we want peace- we have to live peacefully, love everyone, forgive, forget, etc. . Itââ¬â¢s not enough to stand around asking if world peace will ever happen because that wonââ¬â¢t do anything. Actions speak louder than any words. If everyone starts living the peaceful, loving way, things will change. But someone has to start and lead by example. Mahatma Gandhi once said ââ¬Å"You must be the change you wish to see in the world.â⬠We canââ¬â¢t rely on anyone else to do this. We have to do these ourselves. Acceptance, compassion, and tolerance are the foundation of peace. Mahatma Gandhi showed that peace endsà suffering and oppression, not by warring against an enemy but by bearing witness to wrongs and allowing sympathy and common humanity to do their patient work. Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa lived different aspects of peace, which was proven to be a viable way to achieve great things. In the end, I would like to conclude by presenting this touching poem I found on net, which describes that peace takes the form we give it. The preamble to the United Nations Charter sums up the existential dilemma of today: ââ¬Å"Since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that defences of peace must be constructedâ⬠. The challenge today is in creating peace, and not in appreciating peace as a concept. And this cannot be doneà if we keep concentrating on destruction. It is time now to literally construct peace. But Peace is not just a feeling or a state of being. It is not just something that one would achieve only during long hours of prayers or meditation. And it is certainly not end-of-war alone. Peace is life itself. It is our original religion. Peace, therefore, is a natural instinct and if we wish to construct a peaceful world, then all weââ¬â¢ve got to do, is to let it manifest in our lives. Paradise is called so not just because it is believed to be a place of scenic beauty it is also where the divine virtues of love and peace prevail. To achieve peace, three things have to be borne in mind: that peace is our natural religion; that all that we do affects those around us; and that to recharge our pure energies, we need to connect to the Supreme Source. A life operating on these three laws of peace will tangibly transform everything to a peaceful state and recreate the one culture that we all wish to re-establish in the world ââ¬â that is, the culture of peace. War and terrorism have cast their shadow on the world. Most world leaders, international organisations and so-called peace summits tend to define peace in the shadow of war, as ââ¬Ëa situation where there is no war ââ¬Å"between nations. By defining light as the ââ¬Ëabsence of darkness ââ¬Å"or, life as the ââ¬Ëabsence of deathâ⬠, we assign greater importance to the powers of darkness and death, or in the case of peace, to war, rather than peace. Peace is desirable, as is striving for peace. We agree that peace-marches and war protests have a place in this world, and unfortunately so does war. One manââ¬â¢s war is another manââ¬â¢s peace. To achieve peace, three things have to be borne in mind: that peace is our natural religion; that all that we do affects those who surround us; and that to recharge our pure energies, we need to connect to the Supreme Source. A life operating on these three laws of peace will tangibly transform everything to a peaceful state and recreate the one culture that we all wish to re-establish in the world ââ¬â that is, the culture of peace. This is the way of peace: Overcome evil with good, falsehood with truth, and hatred with love. The way of peace is the way of love. Love is the greatest power on earth. It conquers all things Messengers of Peace by LAKSHMISRINIVAS We the messengers of peace With a message for peace on earth For peace we pray in distress This virtue we yearn to harness chorus Peace in the human heart Peace on human face Peace as human dress Peace for the human race Hate is strong and peace fragile Is what we often fear That wrong shall fail and right prevail Is our message loud and clear chorus Peace in the human heart Peace on human face Peace as human dress Peace for the human race As Martin Luther King has said ââ¬Å"I have a dreamâ⬠. So do I, a dream that one day peace prevails on Earth. No person cuts a brotherââ¬â¢s or a sisterââ¬â¢s head, no violence, no one feels unsafe to walk around, no bombs, no terrorist and there is a sense of understanding and love all around. ââ¬Å"lokah samasta sukhino bhavantuâ⬠(May all beings everywhere attain happiness & freedom.) Observe all around. What is the best thing that this creation has ever produced? Mountains, trees, animals, birds no, itââ¬â¢s the human beings. We are the once in the world who have a sense of discrimination or in Hindi ââ¬Å"Vivekâ⬠and what use are we making of that wonderful mind which the nature has bestowed upon us. Making a master plan to attack Mumbai or World tradeà Centre would certainly not the best use of mind. Come on think of it. What is it that these people want? Are they fighting for religion? Then I would say that these people have not understood the true meanings of the holy books which they pretend to have read. If someone throws a stone at a temple, a mosque or a church, we run after that man like dogs with swords in our hands to kill him. But are these temples, mosques, churches real? Why would God want to reside in places created by human beings for Him. He will live in the best designed creation of all. He lives in us! And we do not think even for a moment to cut another personââ¬â¢s throat just because he insulted a religion. No religion teaches to fight. Itââ¬â¢s us who have interpreted these religions as per our convenience that we believe that we are the saviours. That insecurity, which is a result of all these attacks and bombs blast have started to creep in. My mother says, ââ¬Å"do not go to a crowded place on Saturdays or Sundaysâ⬠. At every moment there is a sense of fear that some where or may be at our place, there will be a nuclear attack and nothing will be left. Just even thinking that what are these morons upto, create a feeling of disgust, horror, anger and at the same time ââ¬Ëpityââ¬â¢. Yes ââ¬Ëpityââ¬â¢ is the right word. I pity these people and look down upon them as they do not even know the real purpose of this creation. They have their own concepts of religion, place and living life which are far from the actual meaning. They are no more than a unwanted group of parasites which have their own world and want to conquer our world. An insecticide must be created for these people because in my opinion, they wonââ¬â¢t change with talks. Their minds are corrupted till the roots that even sitting in a world summit where we invite all the terrorist leaders to talk and discuss ââ¬Ëwhat the hell is there problem ?ââ¬â¢ and making settlements wonââ¬â¢t do any good. ââ¬ËAn ostrich dugs its head inside the earthââ¬â¢s surface and thinks that the danger is off because it is not visible.ââ¬â¢ We cannot afford all this. I feel sad when I say that all these terrorists must be given a taste of the fear which they have caused on the society ,but what else can we do?â⬠¦.give in to their demands and create a world full of people who do not have any moral or civil sense. When a disease is inflict ed upon ,one needs to take a bitter medicine or the disease wonââ¬â¢t go. And after all this I pray in future that I sall never see a war on earth. ââ¬Å"OM dhyauH shaantiH Antariksha shaantiH aapaH shaantiH AushadhayaH shaantiH vanaspatayaH shaantiH visvedevaaH shaantiH shaantireva shaantiH saa maa shaantiredhi OM shaantiH shaantiH shaantiHâ⬠(May there be peace in heaven, may there be peace in sky, ââ¬â may there be peace on the earth, may there be peace in waters ââ¬â may there be peace in herbs, may there be peace in vegetations ââ¬â may there be peace in all the Gods, may there be peace in entire Bramha (creation) ââ¬â may there peace everywhere, may there be peace and only peace, may that peace embrace me. OM !! Peace Peace Peace))) All the world over people crave for peace. The leaders and politicians of the world are trying to achieve world peace. But many difficulties come in the way. There is fear and suspicion among nations. Russia suspects the motives of American. America likewise does not trust Russia. Pakistan says that it is afraid of India. That is way she is aiming herself with latest weapons. Some countries are very much advance in science. Their economic condition is far superior to that of others. Such countries want to dominate weaker countries. They exploit them. This creates tension and other conflicts break out here and there. While peace has been established in Vietnam, the Middle East is still the danger spot of the world. Indian and Pakistan are still not on friendly terms. Local wars in these areas can lead to a world war any day. Narrow patriotism, religion fanaticism and military pacts also come in the way of world peace. Some countries want to capture the markets of the world for their trade. This causes unhealthy competition. The possibilities of World War are thus increased and those of peace minimized. Apart form this, there is the questions of ââ¬Ëblack and whiteââ¬â¢. The white people hate ââ¬Ëblackââ¬â¢ men. This hatred creates difficulties in the way of the establishment of peace. It is said that voice of the people is the voice of God. Nowhere in the world people want war. They are fed up with it. The desire for peace is supreme in their hearts. So ways and means must be found for persevering world peace. Following ways may be suggested to ensure everlasting peace in the world. First, there must be disarmament. Powerful countries should give up the race of arming themselves and their friendly countries to the teeth. The manufacture of deathly weapons should beà stopped. This will create a feeling of security. There will be faith instead of suspicion among the various countries of the world. Secondly, big counties should not only accept the principles of ââ¬ËPanch Sheelaââ¬â¢ in theory, but should follow them strictly in practice. These are the five principles of international conduct given to the world by our late Prime Minister Nehru. World peace can be secured only by their observance in practice. Thirdly, peace can be established only of the U.N.O is allowed to work smoothly. All the nations of the world must respect its decisions. Problem should be solved amicably through this agency. The destiny of the world rests in the hands of its leaders. They should unite to achieve this aim. The power of science should be used for human welfare alone. Scientist should put a check on its use for destructive purposes. The people and the politicians should unite and work for world peace. With the disintegration of the Soviet Union, the danger of a third world war gas come to an end. Regional security system are being worked out. These are happy sings which indicate that good sense is drawing on the leaders of the world Terms for Nuclear Ban Treaty are being discussed by the nuclear powers. This is a good sign for world-peace. But the U.S.A has grown all powerful. It is increasingly playing the role of the policeman of the world. This tendency is a dangerous one. It must be crushed in the very beginning .

Healthy Grief Essay
Grieving is a natural part of life. Everyone grieves at some point in their lives, whether itââ¬â¢s the loss of a beloved 1st pet fish or a loss of a loved oneââ¬â¢s life, everyone grieves differently and everyone requires different approaches during the grieving process. This paper will describe the various stages of grief and what to expect with each stage. This paper will also compare and contrast the grieving process as defined by Kubler-Ross, the story of Job while incorporating the Catholic religion. The interaction between joy and the Kubler-Ross model will also be described. In the book of Job, Job is presented as a wealthy, righteous man living somewhere between 2000-1000 B.C. Job suddenly experiences the loss of his family, his possessions, and his health. Job relies on his friends to provide him with comfort. Each stage of grief according to Kubler-Ross is seen within the story of Job. The first stage, denial, is noticed when Job denies the severity of his medical condition. Jobââ¬â¢s anger, which is the second stage of grief, is expressed in 7:11-15 ââ¬Å"Therefore I will not keep silent; I will speak out in the anguish of my spirit, I will complain in the bitterness of my soulâ⬠. When Job had learned of the death of his 10 children, he tore his clothes and shaved his head in anger. The third stage of grief, which is also known as the bargaining stage, is expressed when Job starts to bargain with God in 9:33-34 ââ¬Å"If only there were someone to arbitrate between us, to lay his hand upon us both, someone to remove Godââ¬â¢s rod from me, so that his terror would frighten me no moreâ⬠. Depression, which is the fourth stage of grief is apparent in 10:18 ââ¬Å"Why then did you bring me out of the womb? I wish I had died before any eye saw meâ⬠. Job wishes that he had never have been born so he wouldnââ¬â¢t have to endure the grief and loss which he is experiencing. Acceptance, which is the final stage of grief, is reached after Job stated in (13:15) ââ¬Å"Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him.â⬠This versus is a very powerful versus as it is a reminder to be kind and helpful to others although others may notà demonstrate these actions. The Kulber-Ross theory of grief, designed in 1969 by Elisabeth Kubler is most commonly known as the five stages of grief. The five stages of grief represent the stages that on experiences while undergoing grief or similar life events. Ross created this model is describe the stages of grief for people undergoing terminal illness; however, this model can be used for various forms of significant loss such as divorce, loss of job, natural disaster, or loss of a loved one. The first stage describes a temporary state of disbelief called denial. During the denial stage, an individual shuts out actuality and denies anything bad is really happening. The second stage of grief is called bargaining. Bargaining is when an individual realizes that the denial cannot continue and begins to come to terms with reality. The person may become anger and question why is this happening. People may become angry with themselves, loved one, or others. The third stage is of grief is the bargaining stage. During this stage, patients tend to wish that they can postpone or delay their illness or death. People display their spirituality in great detail during this phase. They beg for a higher power to undo their loss and make things better again. Itââ¬â¢s during the fourth stage that patients tend to feel depressed about their impending situation. The person begins to disconnect himself/herself of life, love, and affection. Most grieving occurs during this stage after the person realizes that their demise is becoming more inevitable. The last and final stage of grief is known as the acceptance stage. It is during this stage that the person has come to terms with their prognosis and feel as if they can reengage in their daily lives again. People of the Catholic religion, much like most people incorporate the five stages of grief into their lives unnoticeably in times of tragedy. Catholics also experience the most painful form of life, which is losing a loved one. Catholics deny the event, they become angry, they attempt to bargain, they feel depressed, and over time, they learn to accept. Much like Job is thousands and thousands of years ago. My own personal way to grieving is probably much different than the average person. When a loved one dies, I feel sad, but I do not display sadness nor do I cry. Instead, I celebrate them. I celebrate their life and encourage others to do the same. You would have never of guessed I had just lost my Mom when she passed away a few years ago. Instead of enduring the five stages of grief, I bypass the first four stages and fell into the acceptance stage. I accepted that she was too sick to be here on Earth and her passing was actually a beautiful moment at which I no longer saw the pain and struggle in her eyes. I am confident that she felt a sense of relief as well. After researching the stages of grief, the writer of this paper is more aware of the process that is needed to people to spirituality be able to heal after a significant event. During the grief process, people experience many emotions, which is clearly defined in the five stages of grief. To acknowledge that Job encountered grief many, many years ago in the exact same way people do now in modern age is reassuring and comforting. Upon completing research of grief, the information learned has not changed by view of grief; however it has made me more aware of the various ways that people react to grief.

3 Steps for Balancing Chemical Equations
3 Steps for Balancing Chemical Equations A chemical equation describes what happens in a chemical reaction. The equation identifies the reactants (starting materials) and products (resulting substances), the formulas of the participants, the phases of the participants (solid, liquid, gas), the direction of the chemical reaction, and the amount of each substance. Chemical equations are balanced for mass and charge, meaning the number and type of atoms on the left side of the arrow is the same as the number of type of atoms on the right side of the arrow. The overall electrical charge on the left side of the equation is the same as the overall charge on the right side of the equation. In the beginning, its important to first learn how to balance equations for mass. Balancing a chemical equation refers to establishing the mathematical relationship between the quantity of reactants and products. The quantities are expressed as grams or moles. It takes practice to be able to write balanced equations. There are essentially three steps to the process. 3 Steps for Balancing Chemical Equations 1) Write the unbalanced equation. Chemical formulas of reactants are listed on the lefthand side of the equation.Products are listed on the righthand side of the equation.Reactants and products are separated by putting an arrow between them to show the direction of the reaction. Reactions at equilibrium will have arrows facing both directions.Use the one- and two-letter element symbols to identify elements. When writing a compound symbol, the cation in the compound (positive charge) is listed before the anion (negative charge). For example, table salt is written as NaCl and not ClNa. 2) Balance the equation. Apply the Law of Conservation of Mass to get the same number of atoms of every element on each side of the equation. Tip: Start by balancing an element that appears in only one reactant and product.Once one element is balanced, proceed to balance another, and another until all elements are balanced.Balance chemical formulas by placing coefficients in front of them. Do not add subscripts, because this will change the formulas. 3) Indicate the states of matter of the reactants and products. Use (g) for gaseous substances.Use (s) for solids.Use (l) for liquids.Use (aq) for species in solution in water.Generally, there isnt a space between the compound and the state of matter.Write the state of matter immediately following the formula of the substance it describes. Balancing Equation: Worked Example Problem Tin oxide is heated with hydrogen gas to form tin metal and water vapor. Write the balanced equation that describes this reaction. 1) Write the unbalanced equation. SnO2 H2 ââ â Sn H2O Refer to Table of Common Polyatomic Ions and Formulas of Ionic Compounds if you have trouble writing the chemical formulas of the products and reactants. 2) Balance the equation. Look at the equation and see which elements are not balanced. In this case, there are two oxygen atoms on the lefthand side of the equation and only one on the righthand side. Correct this by putting a coefficient of 2 in front of water: SnO2 H2 ââ â Sn 2 H2O This puts the hydrogen atoms out of balance. Now there are two hydrogen atoms on the left and four hydrogen atoms on the right. To get four hydrogen atoms on the right, add a coefficient of 2 for the hydrogen gas. The coefficient is a number that goes in front of a chemical formula. Remember, coefficients are multipliers, so if we write 2 H2O it denotes 2x24 hydrogen atoms and 2x12 oxygen atoms. SnO2 2 H2 ââ â Sn 2 H2O The equation is now balanced. Be sure to double-check your math! Each side of the equation has 1 atom of Sn, 2 atoms of O, and 4 atoms of H. 3) Indicate the physical states of the reactants and products. To do this, you need to be familiar with the properties of various compounds or you need to be told what the phases are for the chemicals in the reaction. Oxides are solids, hydrogen forms a diatomic gas, tin is a solid, and the term water vapor indicates that water is in the gas phase: SnO2(s) 2 H2(g) ââ â Sn(s) 2 H2O(g) This is the balanced equation for the reaction. Be sure to check your work! Remember Conservation of Mass requires the equation to have the same number of atoms of each element on both sides of the equation. Multiply the coefficient (number in front) times the subscript (number below an element symbol)à for each atom. For this equation, both sides of the equation contain: 1 Sn atom2 O atoms4 H atoms If youd like more practice, review another example of balancing equations or try some worksheets. If you think youre ready, try a quiz to see if you can balance chemical equations. Balance Equations With Mass and Charge Some chemical reactions involve ions, so you need to balance them for charge as well as mass. Learn how to balance ionic equations and redox (oxidation-reduction) reactions. Similar steps are involved.

Chalk It Up
Chalk It Up Chalk It Up Chalk It Up By Maeve Maddox Having read the post about the expression chock-full, a reader asks, Could you also clarify and explain the origins of ââ¬Å"chalk it up.â⬠Iââ¬â¢ve also seen ââ¬Å"chock it upâ⬠which I assume is an error.à Iââ¬â¢ve also heard ââ¬Å"chop it upâ⬠in the same context. The expression ââ¬Å"chalk it upâ⬠is one of several English idioms that contain the word chalk. The noun chalk, denoting ââ¬Å"an opaque white soft earthy limestone,â⬠has been in the language since the 10th century. The verb arose from the uses to which chalk can be put, especially for writing, drawing, and marking on a variety of surfaces, from walls to grassy fields. In the past, as now, sports enthusiasts used chalk to mark the field of play and to keep score. Tavern keepers kept track of customersââ¬â¢ accounts by writing amounts owed on the wall or on a slate. Scores for tavern games were also ââ¬Å"chalked upâ⬠by the players. Other business owners kept track of accounts in the same way. Amounts owed were ââ¬Å"chalked up.â⬠When a bill was paid, the amount owed was ââ¬Å"chalked off.â⬠Then as now, people sometimes depended upon credit to get by. One of the OED citations given for chalk in the sense of credit is from a song sung by apprentices: ââ¬Å"When we have no mony [sic], We shall find chalk.â⬠Today they might sing, ââ¬Å"When we have no money, We shall find plastic.â⬠Here are a few examples of the use of chalk expressions on the Web: Much ofà hisà elementary school mischief can beà chalked upà toà boyish enthusiasm. (ââ¬Å"attributedâ⬠) I wasnt ready for that so I justà chalked him offà as another friend gone wrong.à (ââ¬Å"dismissed him from my mindâ⬠) If it works youll make money, if not,à chalk it up to experience. (ââ¬Å"Consider it to be a lesson learned.â⬠) This is my plan. Ifà youà canà chalk outà a better, prayà let meà have it. (ââ¬Å"explain, deviseâ⬠) Many Clouds chalks up win in Grand National (earns) We chalked up hisà bad mannersà to too much sugar.à (ââ¬Å"attributedâ⬠) Our live text reporting on the Conservative Party conference finishes here. But thats not the end of the BBCs coverage by a long chalk.à (ââ¬Å"by any meansâ⬠) The OED explains the idiom ââ¬Å"by a long chalkâ⬠this way: ââ¬Å"in a great degree, by far (in allusion to the use of chalk in scoring ââ¬Ëpointsââ¬â¢, etc.) Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Discuss the current impact of health informatics in health care Essay
Discuss the current impact of health informatics in health care. Consider the role of these systems in maintaing patient safety and ensuring that a high standar - Essay Example Coverage of information technology solutions in the medical and health field under the rubrics of the two terms is converging. Computers in Health Care are well accepted the world over as clinical and diagnostic aids, to improve patient care, tone up administration, facilitate accounting and enable effective management control. An important application has been in hospital management, where computers have been an effective tool for doctors, nursing, administration and management. The federal government, through the Australian Department of Health and Ageing, sets national health policies and subsidises the provision of health services by State and Territory governments and the private sector. Health currently accounts for about 9.3 per cent of Australias gross domestic product. Australia has a fairly complex healthcare system, comprising both public and private hospitals and medical practitioners and literally dozens of insurance schemes set up to fund them. The federal government funds universal medical services and pharmaceuticals, and gives financial assistance to public hospitals, residential care facilities, hostels, and home and community care. It is also the major source of funds for health research, and provides support for the training of health professionals and financial assistance to tertiary students.Ã State and Territory governments have primary responsibility under the Constitution for the actual provision of health services, including most acute and psychiatric hospital services. The States and Territories also provide a wide range of community and public health services, including school health, dental health, maternal and child health, occupational health, disease control activities and a variety of health inspection functions.Ã The main health responsibilities of local government are in environmental control such as garbage disposal, clean water, and health

Interpersonal Conflict Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Interpersonal Conflict - Essay Example The problem was that there were misunderstandings and miscommunications because she made a conclusion on her initial observations and she did not even give us time to explain our side. I was already trying to say something but she kept on going about how wrong our actions were and we were not supposed to be listening to other people's conversation. I was quiet but inside I was bursting to tell her about how wrong she was regarding her assumption and that she, too, were listening to other people's conversation. After our talkââ¬âor rather, after my friend and I listened and she said thingsââ¬âI felt annoyed with her because it was useless having that talk if she was the only one talking. She was being sensitive and insensitive at the same time. Also, she was not understanding the situation because she was just letting her emotions mix up with her logic. She was not being rational. à I think in her perspective she was seeing that we were obviously listening to her and that we were laughing at her. Also, since she heard only bits of the conversation, maybe she started sowing what data she had and then made a conclusion that were laughing at her because she was wrong. At the same time, I think she felt that maybe she needed to have a strong personality while she was talking to us so that we will not think that she was just some person we can laugh at. I think she thinks that she was telling us the right things and that we were very sorry that was why we were quiet.... I guess for her, the problem was that we were judgmental and disrespectful. I think the misunderstanding was caused by our youth and our inability to know when to make side comments and when not to. During the time that we were trying to settle the situation, since my friend and I were quiet, I think she thinks that she was telling us the right things and that we were very sorry that was why we were quiet. Personally, by comparing the two perspectives, I noticed that the issue was very simple to control and that it was easily fixed if we were able to do some thingsââ¬âboth on my side and the girl's. Things like, if only my frie nd and I kept our voice down it would not have happened or if we just did not mind her it would not have started. At the same time, my friend and I should have been more assertive instead of just being quiet. On the other hand, she should have been more sensitive to let us explain our side. In other words, both parties had a fault, we were just too stubborn and too blinded by our own feelings to rationalize the situation and deal with it as smartly and as calmly as we could. Now that I am fully aware of the perspectives from both sides, I think if I were to remake that situation when we were trying to resolve the conflict it would sound like this: Me: Hey, you think we should talk to her? Friend: Yeah, I think we
